Labelling Considerations

To maintain consistency, it is wise to design your label and decide on your packaging during your product development stage.

Labelling is used for two purposes:

  • inform the consumer (name, ingredients, cooking/ reconstitution instructions, size, and processor).
  • market the product.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency administers the Food and Drug Act and Regulations and the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act and Regulations as they relate to food. You can view and download the Guide to Food Labelling and Advertising from the CFIA website. Section II of the guide contains the basic labelling requirements.
